Relevance

Whitney/Strong works in one of the most contentious areas of policy and society today – guns.  The organization has made progress by relentlessly seeking common ground among Republicans and Democrats, gun owners and gun violence victims, and advocates of all viewpoints.  This approach requires us to be extremely precise in our language and our approach.  We must also strike a balance between the emotional appeal of Whitney’s personal story and extending the reach and impact of the organization through highlighting others.

opportunity

Whitney/Strong’s current legislative focus is on advancing the Crisis Aversion and Right Retention (CARR) proposal in the Kentucky Legislature.  FDLC has supported Whitney/Strong through multiple legislative and community initiatives, so we were well positioned to bring attention to CARR Day at the Capitol, the organization’s primary push to meet with legislators and rally support for a potential bill.  Whitney/Strong was partnered with Sandy Hook Promise for this initiative, so we served as the media relations resource for both organizations.

solution

FDLC worked with the W/S team to design an event in the capitol rotunda so that it could serve as both an organizational rally and a media event. We sent a press advisory to outlets that had previously covered Whitney/Strong, as well as outlets we knew had regular crews covering the capitol – and followed up directly with individual contacts.  We then worked directly with multiple outlets to schedule one-on-one interviews before and after the rotunda event – while working with both organizations to refine messaging points throughout the day.  We also captured video of our own during the rotunda event and in other meetings for the organization to leverage after the event.

Results

The event was thoroughly covered by Louisville and Lexington media, with pickups from sister outlets across the state. Coverage achieved a potential reach of 1.3 million people, adding to support for legislators to advance the proposal.
